The Final Pain

REVALATIONS OF HATE

THY FINAL PAIN returns with their second album, entitled ‘’…Of Life and Death’’, a real old school death metal cannonade. With Marc Jüttner, vocalist and bassist of the band, and once member of cult band Debauchery, I’ve spooked about their newest release and further plans on Thy Final Pain, but about some personal stuff also. This is my first interview with this band which stands as on of the most interesting acts from ‘’STF’’ records catalogue. Marc was very cool guy to speak with, and I hope this won’t be only interview that I’ve done with this band.
Big Hello to Marc, Simon, Sascha and Lukas…how things going so far at your camp?
Yeah, everything is alright, we're doing fine! Currently, we're working hardly on our new album, which will hopefully be finished until end of July!

‘’…Of Life and Death’’ brings hopes of awakening of true death metal era, that was, by my opinion was with albums like ‘’Vile’’, ‘’Haunted’’, ‘’Legion’’, ‘’Transcend the Rubicon’’…what you think, where did you headed when you started creating this album?
Hm... We have many influences, and you already mentioned some of the albums we like ;) - but at the end it is our own music we're playing. Of course, we are fans of many great bands, but we don't copy them.

In studio, how much time did you take for album to be made? Also, can you tell to our reader how everything did go during the recording process, and are you satisfied how album came out?
The first songs of "Of Life And Death" were created soon after the recordings of "Epitaph" were finished. We did not set ourselves under pressure when writing the songs, it was a long term process in which many songs were canceled, too... After about one year of writing and working on the arrangements we entered the studios and recorded the album - that did not take much time as it was already how the songs should sound. From our point of view the album represented Thy Final Pain at the time of release and we were really satisfied - but of course we would do it differently today...

Thy Final Pain
Do you guys have any plans for shooting any video clips? ‘’Lords of Doom’’ by my opinion sounds like something that should be covered visually…
Yeah, it would be great to shoot some video clips, but we neither have the time nor the people we would need - I think that there will be some video clip for the next CD.

Where do you seek for inspiration for the lyrics, as always, strong and horrifying lyrics, but also those of philosophical were the strong part of death metal expression?
Mostly, the real life is more inspiration than I need - the lyrics come with the songs and are therefore tied closely to the music. What is forgotten most times is that lyrics live in the listener's mind and need not to have the same meaning as for us - that's the strength of death metal lyrics!

There’s lot of a shit going on in world today, mostly as many people live life on a fast lane…How would you comment all of this suicides of young people, murder rampages that are going on mainly in America, and now spreading in Europe, what’s the cause from your point of you? Things like Facebook and shit seems that just strengthening the appearances of some unstable and psychically deranged individuals that will just luresomeone and take his life just like that…
Hm... I find it difficult to answer this question. How things are going on today does not need to be different than things went on in the past, I think the main difference is that we hear of them more than we did in the past, due to the internet, which is a really fast way to spread information, be it important or not...

It looks like that many modern death metal bands play on melody and more brighten riffs, what you think of that, do you think that there’s still death prime strength of death metal in music of bands like (for example) Hatesphere, Vody Styx, Noir…?
There are human musicians behind any music, and so they express their preferences in that way. If listeners like that, why shouldn't they listen to it? And if some metalhead is into depply tuned riffing with massively rhythmic parts he would know how to get it... The pure deathmetal roots will never die, but one has to dig deeper in the masses of CDs at the market. Isn't that better? For me, this is a great thing.

Half of the band belongs to clan Debauchery, and other half to Dual Mentality, how you guys shares your priorities between your prime bands and Thy Final Pain? What’s more important to you at the moment? Do you consider Thy Final Pain just as side project, or your main priority?
Well, Simon and I quit our job at Debauchery in late 2007 – just before Epitaph was released. So for us, Thy Final Pain is a lot more than a side project, although we did not plan to enter the stage at the beginning. For Sascha and Lukas (which are no longer members of Thy Final Pain today, due to job reasons) there was no need to choose one of their bands due to time reasons.

You guys are under the STF records, how did you get in contact with them, and are you satisfied how things are going with them so far?
We got in contact with STF by simply sending them an Epitaph CD ;). Things are going on as expected - in Germany, there are very much metal bands, so it is quite difficult to get to the top of the underground metal scene, and with an independent label in the back we can focus on our main work: Writing songs and playing live - that's all we ever wanted.

You’ve played on ‘’Deeprock Festival’’, can you share with us the experience and feeling you’ve get while playing there? Did you make some important contacts out on that festival?
Hehe, it was a great festival, although the audience seemed to be more interested in metalcore bands ;). Many of them were too young to know the essence of traditional death metal. But for us, this does not matter. We did our best as every time on stage. We did not look out for contacts at the festival, but we met some friends of ours there, that was enough for us.

Do you have daytime jobs besides the music, and any other hobbies except the playing?
Yes, I have a daytime job, but the music takes almost any time I have, so there are almost no other hobbies except our music.

Have you opened for some big names so far, and in how near future we can see Thy Final Pain as headliner on tour?
Yes, we already opened for some of the great old bands like Entombed, Malevolent Creation and others in the past. It was great! But currently, no headliner tour is planned.

I’ve heard that you have album named ‘’Desire, Freedom And Confusion’’ that is in developing process, and that will be released in autumn. Can you tell to us, what people can expect from that album? Will be more harder or different than ‘’…Of Life and Death’’?
Yeah, we're currently working on the album and will start over recording the guitar tracks next week. The album will become more differenciated in songwriting and music, but we won't leave our path. The songs will have some nice speedup compared to "Of Life And Death", and we will better work out our vocal parts and drumming will be a bit tighter and will fit better into the songs. And, additionally, there will be some oldschool fashioned melodic influences, like known for example from Bolt Thrower... For us, this is a kind of snapshot of today's Thy Final Pain - more developed and a bit straighter to get straight into the listener's heads.

How you reacted on deaths of Peter Steele, Ronnie James Dio and Debbie Abono? Seems that metal world rapidly loosing most important people?
From a fan's point of view, this is of course some kind of dramatic happening, but it is a normal thing that people can die anytime. These musicians will leave their work, which is a great work anyways, for the metal community, and that work will never die. That is what should be seen I think! Many great musicians died in the past, often much too young - one of my big idols, Cliff Burton from Metallica, died in 1986, and this was also a great loss, but it did not prevent me from being fascinated when I found my way to metal music because his work remained.

What you think of Joey Belladonna’s return to Anthrax, and do you attending to see ‘’Big Four’’ during the summer festivals?
Anthrax was never one of my main favourites ;).

Who was responsible for cover art?
The last cover was created by a friend of mine, Dennis Hope, who is a great designer. He created his own interpretation of our last album which looked great in my opinion, and - I'm really pleased to announce that - will create the next cover art, too!

Your top five death metal bands and why?
Kataklysm (no need to tell why, awsome sound and songs!), Grave (as deep as it can be, really great), Bolt Thrower (the best from Great Britain), Benediction (in remembrance of my youth) and In Flames (not really pure deathmetal, but one of my favourites).

Have you ever heard of any Serbian metal bands?
Probably I have - I can't keep band names in mind. But mostly, I'm into German underground music, so I do not actively seek for them...

Are there any plans to play during the summer, except you will finish the new album?
Of course! There will be some festival concerts during summer, but here in Germany, most concerts are in spring and autumn, so we're looking forward to some nice concerts in autumn, when we have released our forthcoming album.

This will be all for this time, last words are yours. Take care guys, cheers!
