But as the mix of the album already started and the result of his artistic performance on ASCENDING TO INFINITY is simply brilliant, then we decided to not present our singer by simply revealing his name.

SWALLOW THE SUN ''Emerald Forest and the Blackbird''02.02.2012.
Here we have long awaited, fifth album of Finnish doomsters that has done nearly impossible – became the best album of their discography! Maybe it is too early to tell and I have certainly spoiled your reading enjoyment (you know the conclusion now haha) but I have all the reasons to believe that “Emerald Forest and the Blackbird” is the crowning achievement of Swallow The Sun's career for now. I also reviewed their previous output „New Moon“ and gave it 9,5/10; and I must admit right ahead that I felt that this album will be a bitch to surpass, but Swallow The Sun have done the smartest thing possible – guys didn't try to make „New Moon“ part II, but opted instead for vaster sound. That, in combination with band's imminent growth in experience that came with the passing of years, resulted in one album that shows maturity (oh, how I hate this word in descriptions, but it is very fitting) and it is definitely broadest in musical scope. Almost gone are the prevalent horror atmospheres of „New Moon“ and they are replaced with one feature that I feel is the most important about “Emerald Forest and the Blackbird” – they have thrown away the shackles of genre definitions and now you can call them melodic doom only if you are simply one lazy bastard (in that aspect, this album reminds me of glorious nineties' scene, with bands such as Moonspell, Tiamat and The Gathering, and that is one of the highest praises I can give). Swallow The Sun are moving in many different directions here, throwing all the things they like into one melting pot, while keeping the basis of morose metal and coming out with one product which is undoubtedly of their own. Each and every song on display is a world of its own, but yet together they form one whole that is so strong and inviting that it is hard to believe that the album lasts for a bit more than one hour. One thing that should be pointed out is that “Emerald Forest and the Blackbird” is mellower than its predecessor, which came with increased use of acoustic passages – for the proof of my words check out “This Cut is the Deepest” or “Cathedral Walls”. The latter is maybe the ultimate apex of the album, it features vocals of none other than Anette Olzon from Nightwish and if you wondered how she would fit in this kind of sound, the answer is – perfectly. She scaled down her approach to more melancholic delivery and her duet with Mikko in this dramatic epic is simply the best male/female collaboration ever since “Nymphetamine”. On the other side of musical spectrum one can find “Hate, Lead the Way”, that even goes to black metal dimensions and gives Mikko a chance to chow what he has learned in his time Alghazanth, or mandatory part of Horror sagas „Labyrinth of London (Horror pt. IV)“, spiced with angelic backing female vocals of Aleah Stanbridge. I have a theory that „April 14th“ is a tribute to late Peter Steele, since that date is the day when the giant passed away, and the song also has some musical and lyrical references, but I will have to wait for the official confirmation from the band for that info. The album is closed in grand fashion with “Night Will Forgive Us”, the track that shows band's appreciation for Katatonia, which is evident in that lead guitar motif that is simple in this core, but could be listened to over and over again. All in all, you can see that the album is as varied as it gets and that fact by itself should garner one nice mark. But the fact that made me give the perfect ten to “Emerald Forest and the Blackbird” is that I feel that this album possesses that magic, the unnamed factor that separates a personal classic from usual releases. I cannot explain it, if I knew how to do it I would make a band anyway, but these melodies and vocals are pulling the right heart strings and that is the fact that leaves me mesmerized and in a confused state of mind even after the 15th listening to the album. How can I properly describe how I feel? There is simply no way and that is the ultimate pleasure one scriber can have. After tons of releases and dry writing about their musical aspect, with “Emerald Forest and the Blackbird” I have the pleasure to simply ENJOY the music, art that became lost in this era of mass production. Final conclusion (if you need it after all this): unbelievably good album.

ALCEST-LES VOYAGES DE L'ÂME 10/1014.01.2012.
Here in Serbia we have a saying that can be roughly translated as „you can tell how the day will look like by the morning“... and if we apply that to the new Alcest, we have one outstanding year ahead of us! Released on Jauary 6th, „Les Voyages De L'Âme“ (translated as „journeys of the soul) represents third Alcest's full length and this is indeed one journey as the title says, the journey of Neige's soul into the lands so beautiful it is hard to believe. I have recently read an interview with Neige where he announced that he will slowly put black metal elements behind him and „Les Voyages De L'Âme“ is the definite proof of this as the album represents strongest foray from black metal that this band has ever done. True, one can sporadically spot some blasting sessions but even those don't sound grim / brutal at all but rather melacholic and somehow counterpositioning the dreamy atmosphere that this record possess (check „Beings of light“ for the proof of my words). The majority of the music is based on shoegaze, post rockish and atmospheric elements – the songs flow withount any rush or pushing forward but instead compositions develop naturally like they are unfolding before your eyes. It is clearly evident that Neige is becoming more and more experienced musician as time passess, maybe it is linked with some extensive touring that Alcest has done in the previous period or something else but anyway one can spot that the man is just getting better in his craft. Maybe some of you will say that this album is nothing new for Alcest but closer inspection reveal whole new world that is happening here and repetition of none of two previous albums is present. I must admit that I feel sorry that this album is not release somewhere at the end of spring / beginning of summer as its vibe completely fits that period of the year – warm, full of colors, rich but yet in the same time with underlying sense of melancholy. Song titles like „Beings of light“ or „Summer's glory“ are only the proof of my words. Neige has done some of his most beautiful melodies here (maybe the best ones) – guitars sound like they are talking, not merely playing them and they are so innocent that they will make you feel like a small child in front of wonders of the world, so serene I am at loss for words here... All in all, it seems that Alcest is unstoppable now as they have released their third masterpiece in the row, the album that I cannot find one fault even if I try. Brilliant work.
