Hammer King has thus far released three full-length and Poseidon Will Carry Us Home is their brand new effort. In order to present some new forces on our pages we have aimed to have an interview with them. I guess that lover of traditional melodic heavy metal would find Hammer King as one interesting band to be discovered…
Hello there! Hammer King has just issued a brand new record out ”Poseidon Will Carry Us Home”. This is your 3rd full-length so please could you say us something more about your latest album?
Bonjour, my friend, it’s a pleasure being with you! Yeah, “Poseidon Will Carry Us Home” is our third album – and we have totally followed the path set by the Hammer King, we followed our hearts. This album continues the legend of the Hammer King, this time focusing on thy Majesty’s seafarings. Centrepiece of the album is the ‘Nautical Trilogy’ consisting of the title track, “At The Mercy Of The Waves” and “We Sail Cape Horn”. All of them are quite choir laden and bombastic.
Actually, since this is your first interview for Metal Sound pages could you tell us also something more about the band. In fact, Hammer King has released thus far three albums…
The band was formed in 1978 by non lesser than thy Majesty, the Hammer King, himself. He put the band on hiatus right thereafter until the time was right for a return. In 2014 we received the call of the King and we started working on the first songs. Our debut “Kingdom Of The Hammer King” was released in 2015, the follow-up “King Is Rising” came out in late 2015. “Poseidon Will Carry Us Home” now follows two years later.
We have constantly played shows in the meantime, have extended our stage show, have signed a deal with a booking agency, have written new material and so on. There’s no downtime in the Kingdom of Saint-Tropez!
There are already comments and reviews concerning your new album ”Poseidon Will Carry Us Home” and it seems that people are delighted with your new stuff. Are you satisfied?
Oh yes, absolutely! They say, the third is gonna make it break it! So far we are riding on a high wave, the reviews have been stellar! Haters aside for sure, but even they keep disappearing. We have really got some 8/10, 9/10 and even 10/10 reviews this time, the paper-print magazines also raving. We are proud and most of all, the Hammer King is pleased, that’s all that counts!
Since this is the first interview for our pages could you speak little more about the band’s lyrical background?
As I hinted above, all albums keep telling tales and legends about the Hammer King, the most fierceful of all rulers. While the first album introduced the King and His kingdom, including the trilogy “The King With The Sword And The King”, the second album “King Is Rising” told about the King’s crusades and battles. “Poseidon Will Carry Us Home” is a maritime album – when the King got us His first songs, we could feel the maritime spirit, the rolling of the waves, the adventure of sailing the ancient Cape Horn route. It came very naturally.
We could easily consider your music as heavy metal, but please could you write which bands have the most influence on you when you have started the band?
We always say that we play Heavy Metal, all these sub genres are rubbish to me. Maybe you need “Death Metal” and “Thrash Metal”, but everything else is just Tata…
I don’t think that we are really influenced by other bands. Of course the very classics are in our DNA, as they are in the DNA of many other later Metal bands. But we were handpicked by the Hammer King, so the King is the only influence for our music. All for the King, all by the King!
The ship is on a cover artwork with a huge hammer… so what did you would to express by the title of the album and the cover artwork as well?
As the album contains the Nautical Trilogy, we needed a maritime artwork as well. The “Poseidon” is the Hammer King’s ancient flagship and has sailed the Cape Horn route many times.
It is a well-known fact that the Hammer King has got the biggest Hammer of all, therefore His flagship sports a huge hammer to make His superiority and strength clear.
So if you think “Poseidon Will Carry Us Home”, it can either be the flagship or the ruler of the seven seas himself.
Hammer King is on Cruz Del Sur music since the very beginning. So, are you satisfied by the working with them?
bsolutely! Enrico Leccese is a great man, who understands Hammer King and our music completely. We have all the trust and support from him and on the other hand, we fully trust him. Cruz Del Sur Music is a great place to be for us, not the slightest doubt.
We are not so familiar with Hammer King, since your new record is out, so tell us is the band active live, are there any shows in plan?
Titan: We are always playing live, all the time. There is nothing of bigger importance to a Metal band – other than making albums, of course.
We play a huge release show by next week (today being the 5th October, release date of “Poseidon Will Carry Us Home”), a festival a week thereafter. There will be another festival in Mannheim in November – and we will support Demon and Blitzkrieg in Belgium at the end of December.
And we can never play enough, the King has to be on stage – always check our website and the facebook pages for current dates or merchandise!
From 2015 Hammer King has already issued 3 full-lengths so you are pretty active in studio in a way? Is it hard to produce almost each year a new record?
Titan: I believe that you should make albums as long as you have something to say musically. It is not hard to come up with new songs for us, so as long as we get new songs from the King, we are more than happy to make albums frequently.
The album comes out right now, but we had finished it in May already. We have not worked on any new material yet, as we did not feel it was time. Of course, there are already ate least five great new ideas.
Being in the studio is vastly different from being on stage, but both are wonderful places to work! You learn an awful lot in the studio, I can’t wait till next time!
I would like to thank you for the interview and I wish you very best!
Thank you very much in return, it was a pleasure and an exceptionally interesting interview for myself! Let’s stay in touch, thank you for your support.
God bless the King, may the King bless you!
