Wacken Open Air his its own Internet radio station where several people have their own radio show. Dirk Warnecke is running his own radio show ”Franconian Metal-Time” at Radio Wacken already for some time so we took the chance to do a chat with him about hos working at Radio Wacken, his show and his view and taste of metal music. So, welcome to Radio Wacken 🙂
Hello Dirk! Please, could you introduce us with your radio show Franconian Metaltime that you are running on Radio Wacken already for some time?
I started my Show in March, 28th 2016 at the Wacken Radio and needed a name for my show. I live in Lower Franconia in the north of Bavaria, that is the reason for this name. You can hear my show every Monday 8pm to 10 pm and the most Saturdays 08:30pm to 11pm. In my show i play all genres of metal, except genre specials. The listeners can request songs or simply send greetings, which I read live in the show.
Well, to start the interview we will ask the question how did you get into heavy metal music? At what age, which are the best that caught your attention for the first time when you was still quite young?
I think, i was 12 or 13 years old. A school friend gave me a cassette of the Norwegian heavy metal band T.N.T. with the album „Knights of the new thunder“. I listened to it and thought wow what is that? The extremely high voice together with this heavy sound just inspired me. Another album I got at the beginning was Iron Maiden’s Seventh son of a seventh son..since that time, this music accompanies me till today.
What are your favorite bands today and what is your favorite style of metal music?
I don’t have one favorite style. There are just too many different good styles in Metal, so I can not commit myself to one. Melodic Death Metal, Death Metal and Thrash Metal are the genres I hear and play the most time. I’m a big fan of Kataklysm, Parasite Inc. and Deserted Fear.
How many time you have already been at Wacken? Please, tell us your experiences that you have with Wacken festival, what was your best Wacken so far and why?
I’ve been at Wacken every year since 2007. Every year was great and every year there were improvements by the organizers. The people are all in a good mood, the inhabitants of the village are very friendly and open-minded towards the visitors. At a festival like the WOA with more than 100 bands, you always have the opportunity to discover something new. I have already found many new bands for me through the festival. If you always go to a festival for years, you always meet the same people and you look forward to seeing them again next year.
Do you have sometimes some special Wacken Radio shows which are devoted for some sort of the bands, their new albums or do you also play some interviews that you have recorded?
I occasionally do specials on certain genres. Recently I had a special show for Melodic Death Metal. Of course there are also release shows for albums or bands. I rarely do interviews, but I had a show with an interview with Jean-François “JF” Dagenais, the guitarist of Kataklysm. The recording of this interview was played in my show.
Since you’re very active when it comes to visiting of various festivals and live shows in Germany could you tell us what is your most memorable show of one band that you’ve visited and why?
2013 the concert of Heaven Shall Burn supported by Dying Fetus and Hypocrisy at Hamburg. That was just amazing. 2017 Kataklysm with Graveworm as part of Kataklysm’s 25th Anniversary Tour. Very good shows in 2018 were Dark Tranquility, Cannibal Corpse and Behemoth at the Wacken Open Air.
And for the end tell us your expectations for the upcoming Wacken 2019? There are already many bands that are already confirmed…which are the bands that you are the most focused…?
I will not be in Wacken in 2019. I will take a break after 12 years in a row. For me Wacken is my annual holiday as it is for others a trip to foreign countries. In 2019 I will make a 14 day trip to Thailand. Of course that costs a lot of money and that’s why I’m not at the Wacken Open Air in 2019. That doesn’t mean, that I’ll never go to Wacken again. 😉
Since people who are listening to your show can ask for some bands and their songs to be played what are the most desirable bands at your show?
Very common are bands like Rammstein, Sabaton, Powerwolf, Amon Amarth, Slipknot, In Flames etc. But there are also many requests for smaller, less known bands…
Dirk, could you tell us your top list of 5 best releases that you have played at your show during the last mount at your radio show?
Kataklysm – The Black Sheep, Children Of Bodom – Platitudes And Barren Words, Parasite Inc. – This World, Deserted Fear – Reflect The Storm, Fear Factory – Archetype
I would like to thank you for the interview and I wish you all the best!!! I also hope that we’ll finally meet each others during forthcoming Wacken 2019!
Thank you, I wish that as well
