VULTURE Ghastly Waves & Battered Graves

Vulture-GhastlyWavesAndBatteredGravesHere we have the second full length of Deutsch speed metal lunatics Vulture entitled Ghastly Waves & Battered Graves, and I must say at the very beginning that I am happy to see this band on Metal Blade who picked up this hot name to give them recognition they rightfully deserve. Vulture is relatively new band, formed in 2015, which exploded on the metal scene with their 2017’s debut album The Guillotine; this release felt like a breath of fresh air in the scene of retro thrash speed metal. We all know that this sound is filled to the brim with useless copycats and imitators, but Vulture brought just what this music needs – pure unaltered raw energy and catchy songs. Playing like there’s no tomorrow, Vulture engraved its stamp on the metal scene with iron fist and now it is time to show that it was no fluke. Just look at the band and album’s name and front cover: everything about it just screams pure metal so you just know what kind of sound you can expect here. As I have already said, the first album was raw and savage and this album has brought some slight changes into the formula. Fear not, it’s not that Vulture has suddenly started to play prog metal, no – they have rather honed their craft as a unit and put into their music some twists just to keep things interesting. It is notable that Ghastly Waves & Battered Graves is not constant blasting through and through, as it features a lot of melodic metal work that is seamlessly interwoven into their speed metal attack. Those melodies have just added to the album that extra something in my opinion, as the catchiness is elevated without sacrificing pure metal intensity this band is known for. The direction of the album itself can be seen in choice of cover track for the end, Killer on the loose of legendary Irish rockers Thin Lizzy is vulturized for this occasion without losing the song’s original meaning, but the band has made it sound as their own. I know that it is hard to take new speed thrash metal bands seriously but believe me when I say: Vulture really brings something great to already overcrowded table so if you are into said sound be sure to check this one out!
