German collective The Ocean are back with the conclusion of the saga that started back in 2018 with Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic and just like we got used from them, prepare to be surprised yet again. By now, this troop has its standard sound which is taking cues from various scenes but there is no mistaking The Ocean for another band. They have their own unmistakable sound which is a thing for huge respect and now all that is left for them is to develop it further and see where it takes them. And like I said, Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic is yet another step for The Ocean and even though it is conceptually tied with its predecessor the music is different enough so repeat of previous album is not in the cards here. Where mentioned release was more in one mood, Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic is going for various twists and turns like unpredictable voyage which you will get to hear from the very beginning of first song Triassic. Two familiar faces from the band’s past are here yet again: Jonas Renske is singing yet again (like on previous album) while Tomas Hallbom (Breach) is more than familiar to band’s fans since he appeared on a lot of their albums. I have read interviews with main man Robin Staps where he said that the recording of this album was a totally free experience and you can certainly hear it in the music: as I have said it is moving in various different directions but on the other hand it perfectly falls into place which is in my opinion true face of progressive music. The Ocean is just that: forward thinking band not fearing to explore something new and they have certainly managed to that Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic. This is yet another victory in their vast catalog and I can predict for sure that they will remain on of the leading names in this field for Europe… now, if only everything gets back to normal and we get to hear them in live setting where the also reign.
