American extreme road warriors Goatwhore are back with their seventh blasphemic output entitled Vengeful Ascension proving that the thing which are not broken should not be fixed, meaning that the band is continuing down their tried and true path with just little bits and pieces added so the things are still interesting both for the fans and the band itself. Vengeful Ascension is logical continuation of its predecessor Constricting Rage of the Merciless (and the albums before) which is Goatwhore’s mix of all things extreme. Black, thrash and death metal all have place in Goatwhore’s melting pot with added large dose of rock’n’roll sense of just going wild and for the throat without any pseudo-intellectual bullshit. This can also be felt in overall feeling of the album – Goatwhore are extreme metal band without a shadow of doubt but that certain live laid back feeling can be clearly heard throughout their whole career which means that they are much more linked to Venom that the likes of Deathspell Omega. Speaking of which, it should be said that Vengeful Ascension features a bit larger dose of cold black metal sections than it is usual for Goatwhore which is completely logical when you know that this album is dedicated to rise and fall of Lucifer – simply the music is there to paint the picture of Fallen One. Once again the album is recorded with analogue techniques which also gives to it largely live feel, as if the band is playing in your room. All in all, Goatwhore is staying at the first line of front with Vengeful Ascension and there is no doubt that they will remain on their positions and further strengthen it with relentless touring that they are well known for.
